Fish Therapy
Madu Ganga, an exquisite estuary in southern Sri Lanka, is not only known for its remarkable biodiversity and birdwatching opportunities but also for offering a unique and soothing experience known as fish therapy. This natural wellness practice, also referred to as “fish spa” or “fish pedicure,” is a rejuvenating endeavor that draws visitors seeking relaxation and an alternative approach to foot care.
The concept of fish therapy involves the use of small, toothless fish known as Garra rufa, or more commonly, doctor fish. These tiny fish are naturally inclined to nibble at dead skin cells, making them ideal candidates for this therapeutic experience. The practice typically takes place in designated areas along the estuary, often within serene and scenic settings that allow visitors to connect with the surrounding natural beauty.
The process begins by gently immersing your feet in a specially designed pool or section of the estuary where these doctor fish reside. As you relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings, the doctor fish will instinctively approach your feet and start their work. The sensation of these fish gently nibbling at your skin is not only unique but also surprisingly pleasant and soothing. The fish therapy experience is said to help exfoliate the skin, leaving your feet feeling refreshed and invigorated.
